As in any city or busy tourist resort, there are always people who will be only too happy to separate you from your money. They rely, not only on their skill from practice, but on your carelessness and belief that it won’t happen to you. Make it as difficult as possible for them. If you can, take out a safety deposit box in your hotel and only carry small amounts on you. Don’t walk about with your bag open and keep hold of valuables in outdoor type bars/restaurants. Travellers cheques and Sterling can be changed in any bank, at most hotel receptions and change bureaux. It is worth shopping around as rates do vary. Look out for the commission rate! If necessary, you can use most cash machines to take out money from back home, but you will be given a poor exchange rate and charged a fee for the transaction.
